Within the rural lands north of the big apple can be found the town of Thornwood, NY, originally known as Sherman Park. It would undergo several name changes throughout its history, but no matter what you call it it still stands as a successful village. Lewis Smadback first created the development in 1901 prior to its incorporation as Sherman Park in 1906. Its name would become Hillside in 1909, and eventually would dissolve entirely in 1914. Rather than spelling the end of this community as a distinct entity, this event would serve as the beginning of its most prosperous period.

Prior to this point the village that would become Thornwood, NY grew and prospered alongside Mount Pleasant, NY. As Mount Pleasant broke a population of 10,000 in 1910 it became increasingly apparent that a merger of communities was the best option for both growing cities. In 1914 Hillside was officially dissolved and took the name Thornwood as a village within the city of Mount Pleasant. Thornwood’s prosperity can be attributed, in part, to the presence of a source of Westchester Marble that continues to thrive today as a supplier of this stone. Today the hamlet of Thornwood has a thriving population of over 4,000 people that live and work within the surrounding communities. The past of the town can be seen everywhere, from beautiful white marble pulled from the now defunct quarry to the train station that remains even after the trains no longer run here.
