With the 17th century ending, Caleb Heathcote made a purchase that granted him ownership of the land that would one day be Scarsdale, NY. The name comes from Derbyshire, England, where his ancestral home was located. Just 20 years later, the land would be inherited by his daughters, who would break it up in 1774. Fourteen years after that, the town would be officially established on March 7. When the American Revolution occurred, it would be the site of conflicts between the British and Colonial armies. This conflict is commemorated at the corner of Mamaroneck and Garden Roads, where it took place. At the close of the Revolutionary War, the town would have a population of 281. Rather than increasing, this number would slide by 1840 to a mere 255 people.

Scarsdale, NY would continue to stagnate until 1891 when an investment company began construction on a series of one-family dwellings. This started the transition of the area from a quiet rural backwater into a thriving suburban community. As the town grew, so would civil institutions within it. These included the Scarsdale League of Women Voters, the Heathcote Association, to name a few of them. This growth led to the construction of the Greenacres Elementary School and Scarsdale High School in 1912.
