Within the town of Bedford can be found three hamlets, one of which bears the name of the chief of the American Indian tribe that was located there before its purchase. This hasn’t always been its name; in its earliest days, it was called Whitlockville. In 1897 it was necessary to move the town due to the New Croton Dam flooding the land on which it used to sit. Through an arduous process involving horses pulling logs on which buildings were placed, 50 buildings were moved to the new location.

At this point, Katonah, NY joined the growing list of communities that experienced a change to meet New York City’s demand for water. Katonah, NY was blissfully free of conflict during the majority of the American Revolution. Still, most of its male population would opt to join with the 4th Regiment of the Line out of New York. Like the rest of the area, Katonah fell into the neutral ground, supposedly free from conflict from either side. While this did prevent it from becoming a battlefield, both sides regularly shook the village down for resources. It did fare better than its neighboring communities thanks to its location, however. To this day, the community remains relatively small and neighborly, with a population just barely breaching 2000 people. Despite this, there is a great deal of local pride, which in one instance stood to legally block the attempted patenting of the “Katonah Collection” by Martha Stewart.
