The small community of Elmsford, NY comprises a one-mile area within the larger town of Greenburgh. Like many communities of this type it got its start as farmland within a larger community. This agricultural nature would persist through the early days of the areas growth until railroads were brought to the area at the end of the 19th century. This influx of industry and residents would bring the town to become incorporated in 1910. The name Elmsford wasn’t the first it was known as, having been called both Hall’s corners and Storm’s Bridge during its time.

Elmsford came to pass in 1870 in recognition of an ancient elm tree that stood at the towns center. The town has a patriotic heritage, due in no small part to one of its local graveyards serving as the resting place of Isaac Van Wart, a hero of the Revolution. John Andre, David Williams, and John Paulding are also celebrated here with streets named after these important patriots. In addition to its ties to the Revolutionary War, the town is also said to be the birthplace of the term ‘cocktail’. The story goes that at one point a local tavern owner had run out of wooden stirrers for his drinks as the war raged on. He opted to use the tail feathers of roosters to stir the drinks, resulting in the term cocktails. If it is to be believed these roosters were said to be captured from nearby Torys.
