This thriving community is one of the most well-known areas of New York City. Taking its name from the man who first settled the area, Jonas Bronck, the Bronx, has stood since 1639. Four years later, the native Lenape people would find themselves displaced by these settlers, but it would serve as home to thousands of immigrants from Europe in the years to come. Prior to 1873, the Bronx was a separate community from the rising power that was New York City of the time. Three of its communities would be annexed into New York at that time, with the rest joining it twenty years later in 1895.

All this consolidation would lead to the birth of New York City in 1898, and the Bronx, NY would stand as one of the five distinct boroughs within the city at the time. In the years following 1914 in the 20th century, New York would continue to grow, having a profound effect on the Bronx. The southern portion of the Bronx would become a booming manufacturing area, with over 63 piano factories existing in the area in addition to other industries. For reasons that are still debated, the area would experience a sharp decline in the 1960s, a condition that would persist until the 1980s. Since then, there has been a rising level of affluence and development experienced within the community. This development had a focus on providing affordable housing that would bring more people into the area and help stimulate the economy in the area through this growth. As a result, more than 40 new banks were opened, and chain stores like Staples, Marshalls, and Targets moved stores into the area.
