The land that is now Shelton, CT was originally part of the English settlement of Stratford. Prior to the town of Shelton splitting from Stratford, there was a company established by Edward N. Shelton that operated out of the area. This business would be the source of the new borough’s name, which would become associated with profit and industry throughout the area. This period wasn’t to last though, as in 1975 the Sponge Rubber Products Plant would go up in a massive blaze that was eventually determined to be arson.
The president of Grand Sheet Metal Products, the parent company of Sponge Rubber, was suspected to be responsible though he would be acquitted of those charges. He was not able to claim the insurance money for the blaze since he was determined to have been responsible for it since top official’s in the company ultimately plead guilty or were convicted of the charges. In the wake of this fire, the Shelton Industrial complex would begin to decline, with the last of the businesses having left the area by the 1980s. This wouldn’t spell the end of the community’s affluence, however, simply shifting in the source of its prosperity. When Route 8 was completed, a new flood of businesses would come into the area, many of them establishing offices to take advantage of the reduced cost of business over nearby towns. Important companies like General Electric, Gama Aviation, Black and Decker, would help to drive the affluence of the town. Today it’s a thriving community of over 40,000 people that all live and work in the surrounding areas.
