Did you know?
On the Eastern Coast of the Empire State can be found one of the world’s most important centers of economic, social, and industrial growth – New York City or otherwise often also known as NYC. New York City includes the boroughs of Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island and is one of the world’s most populous megacities with a staggering 20 million population living in a land area of about 302.6 square miles. NYC is home to some of the world’s most visited attractions including iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the World Trade Center. NYC attracts more than 65 million domestic and international tourists a year.
It takes its name from the Duke of York, the man who would go on to become King James II of England. The distinctive shape of the region was carved from the soil by a sheet of ice that was nearly half a mile deep over 75,000 years ago. This same event left bedrock at a depth that was relatively shallow that made the construction of New York City’s most impressive structures possible. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the region would be home to tribes of Native Americans from the Algonquian nation, most prominently the Lenape tribe. Following the arrival of Henry Hudson, a permanent settlement would be created on the Southern coast of Manhattan Island. This city, established by the Dutch as New Amsterdam, would eventually pass from the Dutch into English rule before becoming part of the United States following the Revolutionary War. At this point, New York City would become, and still remains, the 12th city in the country among those that have been inhabited the longest. New York City officially abolished slavery in 1799, though it would take until 1827 for this process to be completed in the state. European immigration and the city’s place as a center of international trade would begin transforming the city. This cultural melting pot and booming growth would lead to some of the literary world’s most prominent figures to live here. These include names such as Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, William Cullen Bryant, Herman Melville, and countless others. 1860 would see a massive influx of Irish immigrants during the Great Irish Famine, while unrest in Germany would lead to refugees from those areas. NYC, as we envision it today, wouldn’t form until nearly the turn of the century when Brooklyn would become consolidated with the city, including New York and Richmond Counties. The creation of the subway in 1904 would help bind the identity of New Yorkers together as transportation became easier. By 1920 this explosive growth would see New York surpass London as the most populous city in the world. With such a diverse and growing population, it’s unsurprising that the city has been part of some of the most important cultural events in American history. Among them can be included in the Harlem Renaissance that saw a golden age in the proliferation of African-American culture in the United States. 1969 would see the Stonewall Riots happen, a response to a police raid that has long been heralded as one of the most important events in the gay liberation movement. New York City had a reputation for being a violent cesspit of crime and gangland activity, in part due to the industrial restructuring that took place during the 1970s. This period would herald a dark time for the city as crime and gangs took over the streets and subways throughout the city. As the 1990s began, this would reverse due to gentrification, better job opportunities, new residents, and, most important, a changed approach to crime by the NYPD. Today NYC is one of the safest major metropolitan areas and continues to be home to important social and economic change throughout the United States. The people of New York have long been able to rely on the cleaning services provided by Miss Maid to ensure that they can get back to the business of changing the world for the better. One phone call will get you a free consultation on the services we offer, as well as an obligation-free quote. So call today and leave the cleaning to us!
