Within the southern reaches of Westchester county can be found the thriving rural town of Eastchester, NY. This settlement would get its beginning in 1664 when a collection of families moved to the area to seek their fortune in the open spaces of the New World. Though remote, the city was owned by Thomas Pell, who granted this group of ten families a deed to the land. It wouldn’t be long after they arrived that an additional 26 families would come to help form the kernel of the growing town. The following years the laws that would govern the region were set down in a document then called the Eastchester Covenant.
This covenant is one of the community’s contributions to history, as it was one of a few rare examples of such a document during its time. Within it were laid out the precepts that continue to define the community today, including the disposition of property and guidelines for the education of children. These tenants would stand even through the horrors of the American Revolution. This confrontation led to bloody battles being fought all around this community even as it was spared. Following this tumultuous period, the town would continue to grow steadily. The first official educational institution was created in 1899 when the University of New York signed a charter allowing the Waverly Union School to begin holding classes. At this time, the newly created school only provided services for students from Kindergarten to Senior. Multiple schools would be opened throughout the following years based on this charter, and today the community of over 10,000 has an excellent school system.
