In 1683 1000 acres were purchased from the Kitchawonke Indians by Stephanus VanCortlandt. Before becoming part of what is now the village of Buchanan, NY the property would pass through the hands of Philip Verplanck, and eventually would be sold for development to a real estate company. The principal investor for the land was John Henry. A tannery would be opened in 1860 that was famed for the creation of patent leather that was in high demand for wagons, carriages, and shoes.
This tannery would be purchased by Alexander Buchanan who would begin a push that would see it add oilcloth to its list of products. Railroads also played an important role in the town’s history, which until 1890 was known as East Haverstraw. In 1890 the town name would be changed to Buchanan, in the same year as George Buchanan became the towns, first postmaster. Despite this name change, the village wouldn’t be incorporated until 1928. By this time the tannery had expanded to include oilcloth production and would go on to be sold to Tensolite that would produce fine wiring for use in the aerospace industry. The Westchester Industrial Complex would later be built on this property. Today this area is home to over 2,000 people that live and work throughout the area. It maintains a strong and proud connection to our nation’s history and the part its residents had to play in it.
