Within the town of Lewisboro, NY can be found the quiet rural hamlet of Cross River, NY. The history of this area can be traced back to the founding of the village by an early settler by the name of John Lewis. The land on which the city sits was purchased from the local native tribes, and the settlers began forming their community around South Salem. Mr. Lewis was a financier who provided funding from the town and requested that his name be placed upon the vestigial town (now known as Lewiston) accordingly.

The small hamlet of Cross River would take its name from the river that flows through it on its way to the Cross-River Reservoir. This area is known for the elaborate gardens that have been present since its earliest years and continue to be maintained out of tradition. Two minor historical figures were known to have live in the hills surrounding the area.

These were the Hermit of West Mountain, Sarah Bishop, and The Leatherman. Sarah retreated to these secluded hills after mistreatment at the hands of the British soldiers. The cave in which she lived can be found near Mountain Lakes Camp on the northern edge of Lake Rippowam. The Leatherman got his name for the high-quality leather goods he would peddle along the same route in town for 25 years. He was known to maintain several homes in the woods, one of them near Ward Pound Ridge is referred to as ‘The Leatherman’s Cave.’His legacy lives on in the 10k race that was started in his honor and is known as “The Leatherman’s Loop.”
