22 Puritans would come from nearby Stamford Connecticut in the cold winter of 1680 to the land they purchased from Chief Katonah of the local tribe of Native Americans. 17 years later it would become recognized as a town in its own right when its borders were set through a patent, though at that time it was considered part of Connecticut. Three years later King William would decree that it be made part of New York by his ruling on a border dispute between the colonies.

During the American Revolutionary War this community would serve as the political seat of Westchester County. During this same war the city of Bedford, NY would be burned, leading to a reconstruction effort in its wake. Throughout the following years it would trade off its position as county seat with White Plains, a tradition that would continue until 1870. To this day the Court House in Bedford stands as the oldest government building in the county.

Among its many accolades is its distinction as the home of Alcoholics Anonymous, founded by residents Bill & Lois Wilson. Today the area serves as home to a thriving population of over 18,000 people who enjoy the quiet of pastoral life in a city that is older than the country itself. Reminders of its history can be found in the Bedford Oak, which has stood in the city for most of its existence at 300 years old.
