This small community within the city of White Plains was originally open farmland used by the Weckquaeskeck tribe of Native Americans. The towering balsam trees that filled the area at the time is said to be the origin of the name of the overarching city. Others suggest that the name is due to the pervasive mists that were often found over swampland adjacent to the Bronx River. The first Europeans to settle the area would arrive in 1683. These settlers, Puritans from Connecticut, would purchase 4,400 acres from the local tribe.

Her flight across the Atlantic is memorialized with a bronze propeller that can be found attached to a stone in a small park near her ancestral home.
