The first arrival of Europeans to the land that would become Southport, CT was in 1637 when a battle between the native tribe and the colonial forces of England took place. The battle was immortalized as the “Fairfield Swamp Fight,” though the specific location of the battle is lost to history. During the 18th century, the name of the village in the area would be Mill River, a name which would persist until 1831 when the name of Southport would be taken. A lot had changed in the intervening years.

The previous collection of small houses having exploded into a large commercial area with stores, warehouses, schools, churches, and a variety of elegant houses. During this time, it was the Long Island Sound’s dominant coastal port being frequented by ships carrying goods and produce to and from New York City. By the end of the 19th century, the harbor was shipping out over 100,000 barrels of local products, including potatoes, onions, carrots, and a host of other goods. The boom time wasn’t to last, however. The arrival of the railway and competition with steamboats along the river resulted in a decline that only the local Southport onion’s bolstering the local economy until the end of the century. The city now consists of a comfortable 1,500 residents that continue to live and thrive in this beautiful and historic town.
