In the earliest days of Redding’s history, the land was crisscrossed by Native American trails, the Berkshire Path being among them. In 1693 colonials began being given grants of land located in the area that would become the Redding of today. The land was originally purchased from the Native Americans by Roger Ludlow to create the city of Northfield, which included land that would eventually become part of the modern city of Redding, CT.

Just before the time when the Declaration of Independence would be made, Tory loyalists would come into conflict with those who supported the separation of the colonies from their mother country. When the war was formally begun in 1777, the 5th Regiment of the Continental Army would be created, with many of its men coming from Redding, CT. After the war was over, 1850 would see the arrival of the railroad, linking the cities of Norwalk and Danbury together. Aside from its historical interest, the community also has a claim to a geological oddity as well. The local mine produces nine minerals, some of which were unknown at the time it was first created. In addition to columbite, beryl, feldspar, quartz, mica, and spodumene, the bedrock under the train station was found to be an immense and pure deposit of garnet.
