Within the municipality of Cortlandt in Westchester County can be found the small hamlet of Verplanck, NY. This area has been occupied since the 1630s when Verplanck’s Point was originally established by Abraham Isaacsen Verplanck. It was first identified by Henry Hudson in 1609 when he docked the Halve Maen at the native village that was there before the Europeans arrival. Verplanck’s Point would serve as an important bivouac during the American Revolutionary War, having been used as a military encampment on several occasions throughout the altercation.

With the passing of the war and the formation of the country, the small hamlet would be purchased by a syndicate and the construction of the city would begin in earnest. The first Justice of the Peace of Verplanck would be Dan Lent, who would serve the city from 1829-1857. During his time the first Post Office would be opened in 1838 on February 1st in what is now the Old Mansion House located on the corner of Broadway and Sixth St. 1840 would see the establishment of the Verplanck Academy on Monday 18th of May. One of the primary industries in Verplanck, NY during its earliest days was the brick industry, which would churn out over 15,000 bricks a day during its heyday. In 1862 a new railroad station would be opened closer to the town center to replace the one that was located near the railroad bridge. Today this area is home to nearly 2,000 people who live and work in the surrounding city of Cortlandt.
