Between 16 and 35 families led by William Beardsley and Reverend Adam Blakeman founded the city of Stratford, CT in 1639. It was originally known as the Pequannock Plantation, changing its name to Cupheag by 1640. Three years later, the name would be changed to Stratford to honor the birthplace of the Bard, William Shakespeare. In its earliest period, Stratford, CT served as a sanctuary for the god-fearing pilgrims who established it, with both its religious and municipal concerns being managed by the Reverend. While this idea persisted throughout the life of Reverend Blakeman, it would quickly begin falling apart afterward.

The children of the original settlers rejected the austerity that drove the founding families, seeking to create a more traditional administration for the town. The end of the 17th century would see Stratford under the control of the Connecticut government. Over the town’s 350 years, the population saw much intermarrying of the founding families, and many of their descendants remain living in town. While the town may have been settled by Puritan families, it would be the site of the first Anglican Church to be established in the state in 1707. The people of Stratford would go on to create numerous new towns, including New Jersey and Newark. Today the city has a thriving population of over 52,000 people who live and work within the community or commute to the city. It’s connection to Shakespeare has never been forgotten, with the Shakespeare Festival Theater and the Stratford Library Shakespeare bearing his name.
