This community is found along the shores of the Long Island Sound in southern Fairfield County, Connecticut. It was first established in 1649 and has the distinction of being sixth among the most populous places in the state today. Its first mention was in 1640 by Dutch Navigator Adrian Block. The land Norwalk, CT sits on would be purchased between 1640-41 by two separate petitioners. The town would slowly grow as people moved to it, with the first meeting house being built in 1659, where a stone now stands commemorating the occasion.

It’s first church would be established in 1652 by minister Thomas Hanford. In its earliest days the town was heavily concerned with agricultural pursuits, though maritime concerns were also prevalent within the community. With the arrival of the American Revolutionary War times would get exciting in Norwalk. A team of raiders would be transported on Norwalk Whaling boats right under the nose of British Warships in Huntington Bay where several Torys were killed and sixteen taken prisoner before the raiders slipped away. Along with traditional agriculture the community would also come to be known for its cultivation of oysters, started by Captain Peter Decker. While the industry slipped into decline for many years due to overfishing, it has recently been seeing a revival under sustainable aquaculture.
