Dissatisfied with the speed of reform by the Anglicans, a group of Congregationalists and Puritans set out to establish an ecclesiastical society. Intent on operating under their own set of guidelines, they were granted the right to settle in the land that would become Hartford, Wethersfield, and Windsor in the state of Connecticut. A member of one of these groups, Roger Ludlowe, would purchase the first land that would become Fairfield in the year 1639.

In the two hundred years to follow, this land would become the home of the cities of Fairfield, Redding, Easton, Weston, Westport, and Bridgeport. At the point, the Revolutionary War started this area of the country was deeply entrenched with Tory support. This conflict put the residents of Fairfield in a tight spot, landing them right in the middle of the country’s fight for its right to exist. They stood steadfast in their support of America’s rebellion, which resulted in the entire city being burned to the ground as a result. The city and its residents did not falter, and slowly rebuilt the public buildings and their homes, restoring the town not long after the war’s end. War may have destroyed Fairfield during the Revolution, but a war would also cause it to boom. World War I would see an influx of residents as workers in the nearby Bridgeport Munitions Factory would have to look outside that city to find homes. Many of them would come to Fairfield to start construction on their own homes. The introduction of the automobile and trolley would lead to Fairfield becoming a desirable place to live as commuting to Bridgeport for work became easier.
