Prior to that time, it was merely a part of the city of North Salem. In 1847 the New York and Harlem Railroad would bring commuter service to the area and all of the economic stimulation that comes with it. For the first year of its operation, Croton Falls Station was the furthest north you could travel from New York City; after 1848, the end of the line would get extended to Dover Plains. As the Harlem Railroad became part of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in 1864, the original station would undergo renovation into something newer and more modern. 1907 would see demand for rail service increase to such a degree that a second line would be required. Ultimately the original Railroad Company would be acquired by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968, and today it is designated as a Penn Central Railroad.
