From the burgeoning village of Purchase, NY a small band of Quakers moved to the area that would become Chappaqua, NY. The land on which they built their first homes is known today as Quaker Street. The newly born town’s meetings were hosted in the home of Abel Weeks until they finally built a meeting house over 20 years later. The town’s name was taken from the native people that lived there before the Quakers came, who called the land “The Rustling Land”, a rough translation of the Algonquian word shah-pah-ka.

While it underwent many spelling changes throughout the years, they ultimately settled on Chappaqua. The rivers and streams surrounding the area would be important to the growth of the town, powering mills that produced oil pressed from beans and mills that crushed corn. Half of the town was dedicated to farming, which was an important source of produce as well as serving as a launching pad for the milk industry in town. As the town grew new industries would spring up, including furniture, shoes, eyeglasses, hardware, and vinegar. While the town was growing steadily, there would be a minor setback during the 1904 tornado that destroyed many of the area’s earliest buildings. Since that day Chappaqua has grown and thrived to contain a population of over 2,000 people who continue to maintain the tradition of hospitality and hard work that was brought with the Quakers. In spite of its small size, it has served as home to numerous people of note, including Ace Frehley of KISS, daughter of Woody Guthrie, Nora Guthrie, and others.
