Sitting within the southern foothills of the Berkshire Mountains can be found the town of Brookfield, CT. In its earliest days the area that would become Brookfield, CT was occupied by members of the Wyantenuck and Paugussett nations of Native Americans. Settlers moved to the area and worked alongside the natives peacefully for many years, though it would not then be known as Brookfield.

The first name the area community used would be Newbury. This name was selected as the land on which it sits used to be part of Danbury, New Milford, and Newtown. A diary written by Susan Sherman, a resident of the town in 1850, speaks of day to day life within the community. It mentioned often traveling to New Haven, Danbury, and Hartford and other important parts of her life, including her wedding and recipes. This diary shares some of the earliest anecdotes of the community still widely available. In 1912 there were two train stations established in the area, which were used by the youth of the town to attend school in Danbury. When the original town hall built in 1794 no longer served the needs of the community, it was replaced in 1876 for $4,000. This would not be the last time the town’s center of government was moved. The community of Bridgeport has dedicated itself to the health, well being, and education of its children throughout its history. The pioneer of this effort was Mary Northrop, who left money to the town in 1794 under the stipulation that it be dedicated to public education. This tradition has continued with the construction of Brookfield High School in 1959. Miss Maid is proud to serve a community that has a great love of education and the betterment of its youth.
