Stephanus Van Cortland was the recipient of a grant of 83,000 acres from King William of England in 1697. This was held as a manor for the entirety of his life. Upon his passing in 1700, the area would see development begin. By 1734 the entirety of his estate had been partitioned out to various townships and individuals. By 1788 the entirety of the town was officially established under the name Stephentown before being granted its current name in 1808. One of the town’s claims to fame was the present of “Old Bet,” an Indian Elephant owned by Hachaliah Bailey. This cattle merchant and farmer would showcase his elephant locally before taking it on tours throughout the neighboring towns. This slowly led to the growth of a menagerie of rare and exotic animals being bought and exhibited within the town. In this practice, we find the kernel that formed the modern American Circus, earning the area the name “Cradle of the American Circus.” After the death of “Old Bet,” Bailey would import two additional elephants, and construction would begin on the Elephant Hotel.
